The water near the southern tip of Bimini moved faster than the family expected.
Police say a 36-year-old woman from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, died on Tuesday after a strong current pulled her two sons away while they were snorkeling. The woman was in the water with her husband and children when the tide shifted. She swam after the boys but the current caught her as well. Both children were pulled from the water before their mother was recovered.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10 a.m. reporting an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. They found that medics had already transported her to the local clinic. A doctor there declared her dead despite resuscitation efforts. Police noted that CPR was administered at the dock after her rescue from the sea.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation into the sudden death. They stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise medical cause of death. The investigation remains the primary step before the case is closed.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed the woman's nationality and said officials are coordinating with local authorities. A spokesperson stated that the government is providing support to the family during the process.
