Pedestrians and drivers in downtown Corpus Christi will share the streets on Saturday as the city hosts its 19th annual Día de los Muertos Street Festival. The free event occupies 10 downtown blocks from 1 p.m. to midnight. Attendees will find live music, art, food, and cultural performances throughout the district.
The festival began 19 years ago as a local gathering to honor deceased loved ones. It has since expanded into a major weekend event. A community ofrenda, or altar, will serve as a focal point for families to remember those who have passed. The holiday emphasizes celebrating the lives of the departed.
The festival anchors a busy schedule of Halloween-themed activities across the Coastal Bend. On Saturday and Sunday, Villain Invasion Halloween Fest takes over the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina. Attendees can meet horror movie actors and enter costume contests. Weekend passes start at $20, and children 12 and under enter free. Visitors bringing two nonperishable food items for the Coastal Bend Food Bank receive a special-edition poster while supplies last.
On Saturday morning, the Monster Mash Cupcake Dash returns to Water's Edge Park. Participants can join a 5K, a 10K, or a 2-mile walk. Every finisher receives a cupcake. Proceeds from the race benefit Family Counseling Services, which provides mental health care in the region. Families seeking a quieter option can visit Asbury Methodist Church for pumpkin painting from 10 a.m. to noon. The church's pumpkin patch remains open through Halloween.
A new event debuts Saturday at the Hilliard Center. Hocus Pocus Corpus runs from noon to 3 p.m. and offers free activities, including trick-or-treating and door prizes. The event also features a community resource fair and a presentation on renters' rights. Residents can suggest future events by emailing Stephanie Molina at stephanie.molina@kristv.com.
