The upcoming Hunger Games prequel is scheduled to open in theaters on November 20, 2026, with confirmed participation from the original franchise’s lead trio.

Jennifer Lawrence confirmed her return as Katniss Everdeen during a recent interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast. She stated that the film also brings back Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson, whose involvement had been widely anticipated. The movie, titled In Sunrise on the Reaping, is set 24 years before the events of the first film. The plot centers on a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy competing in the 50th Hunger Games, an event designated as the Second Quarter Quell where the number of tributes is doubled.

Lawrence described the production environment as familiar, noting that the same camera operators and assistant directors from the original series returned to the set. She said, "It was the same crew. It was the same camera guys, the same AD, who I've worked with a million times." She characterized the overall experience as "unbelievable" and the reunion with her former co-stars as "so beautiful." Lawrence noted that she and Hutcherson frequently embraced during the shoot. Harrelson maintained his characteristic style by entering her hotel room through the window rather than the door, a move Lawrence joked would not feel authentic if he respected boundaries.

The cast also includes Joseph Zada in the role of young Haymitch and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow. While the primary narrative focuses on the past, the film is expected to feature the legacy characters from the original movies through flashforwards or a framing device. Lawrence also revisited a 2013 production decision where she cut her hair into a pixie cut after producers initially refused to provide a wig for the Mockingjay films. She cited fatigue from repeatedly dyeing her hair brown for the role and later described the short cut as "the worst haircut anyone has ever seen in their life," a look that became well known among fans.

The film is set to begin its theatrical run on November 20. This release date marks the next chapter in the franchise, which has previously generated substantial box office returns and cultural impact.
