Tension mounted across the kingdom following a coordinated assault on a place of worship, prompting the monarch to demand a robust and immediate reaction from the state. The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight, has placed significant pressure on security agencies to restore a sense of order and identify the culprits behind the violence that shocked the nation.

The royal court announced that King Abdullah has directed security forces to act firmly in locating those responsible for the tragedy. The attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Karak governorate resulted in the death of eight individuals and left forty others wounded. In the immediate aftermath, the US embassy in Amman reported that Jordan has increased protective measures at key locations, including shopping malls and foreign diplomatic missions, while authorities continue their search for the perpetrators.

The shooting occurred on Friday at a site roughly 120 kilometers southwest of the capital. Gunmen fired for several minutes while a funeral service was in progress. Jordanian officials have classified the event as an act of extremist terrorism. Although no organization has formally claimed responsibility, the state has declared three days of national mourning. Officials noted that it remains too early to determine if the attackers have connections to specific groups within or beyond the country's borders.

The monarch traveled to the region within hours of the incident to assess the situation. He stated that the perpetrators would be dealt with decisively, using the phrase iron fist to describe the intended response. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan commented on the nature of the attack, describing it as the outcome of a terrorist ideology and blind extremism. He affirmed that society would not be allowed to follow that path, signaling a strong political stance against the forces behind the violence.

Survivors provided detailed accounts of the chaotic moments during the service. Nasser al-Burqan, a lawyer who survived the shooting, described an assailant standing approximately two meters away who aimed a handgun at him and fired. He later learned from his son, who was also present, that the young man had been shot in the leg and was receiving medical care. Al-Burqan further reported that after the gunfire ceased, he observed two attackers through a window, one of whom was masked and the other was carrying a handgun while unmasked.

Local leaders and hospital staff reacted with visible distress to the high casualty count. Tarek Ammarin, whose relative was among the injured, described the event as a massacre in every sense of the word. Bahjat al-Rushda, the mayor of Shihan village in Karak, condemned the act as wicked. He expressed a hope that the country would maintain its safety, reflecting a broader desire for stability following the disruption. Video footage from Saturday showed police units patrolling the exterior of the church, underscoring the heightened state of alert.

Such incidents are uncommon in the region, although authorities note that they have thwarted multiple plots in recent years by groups adhering to a strict interpretation of Islam. Karak is home to a minority Christian community, and the broader area contains several biblical sites that attract pilgrims from around the world. The juxtaposition of this rare violence against a historically peaceful backdrop adds to the urgency of finding those responsible and restoring confidence in the nation's security framework.
