Oleshky residents are waiting for a break in the fighting that would allow food and medicine to reach their homes. The town in Kherson Oblast has been under Russian occupation, and access has been cut off by mines laid on local roads.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the conditions as dire in a video address on Friday. He stated that an agreement to open access should take effect soon. Kyiv is seeking a humanitarian operation to restore access, deliver supplies, and allow residents to leave the combat zone.
Zelenskyy noted that negotiations have continued at various levels for some time. He said Ukraine is prepared to do its part and relies on American mediation to finalize the process.
The general staffs of Ukraine and Russia announced on Friday evening that a ceasefire will take effect in a designated area starting on the night of October 27. This pause is designed to facilitate the humanitarian mission. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, confirmed that the operation is scheduled for October 29.
The White House stated that First Lady Melania Trump secured the truce, describing a humanitarian disaster as unfolding in the town. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia agreed to the ceasefire to allow the mission to proceed.
