Meta Platforms, Amazon.com, and Alphabet reported negative free cash flow in the most recent quarter, marking a departure from previous trends among major technology companies. Only Microsoft maintained positive cash flow during this period. These firms are allocating trillions of dollars toward artificial intelligence infrastructure, relying on their established businesses to fund the expansion.

Meta recorded a negative free cash flow of $2.12 billion. Amazon's outflows increased to $42.4 billion, while Alphabet's reached $9.07 billion. Microsoft's cash generation fell 27 percent to $18.63 billion, a second consecutive quarterly decline. The company announced it will issue bonds to support its ongoing AI infrastructure spending.

Amazon indicated that growth in its retail and advertising segments slowed. Online sales rose 2 percent year over year, down from 10 percent in the prior year and below analyst estimates. The company's revenue guidance midpoint was lower than the $244.5 billion projected by analysts. Amazon expects capital expenditures to reach $220 billion this year. Analysts estimate this figure will exceed $280 billion next year.

Alphabet's core search business experienced slowing growth for the third consecutive quarter, missing analyst expectations. YouTube advertising revenue also fell short of projections. Mark Mahaney, an analyst at Evercore, stated that while strong cloud revenue was positive, the decelerating digital advertising business was the primary concern. He noted that AI-powered bots and agents are challenging traditional search revenue.

Tracy Woo, a Forrester analyst, observed that Alphabet's infrastructure investment is currently tolerated but the company is balancing risks. She noted that weakness in search and YouTube performance raises questions about AI displacing the company's main revenue sources. The concern centers on whether future AI spending will outpace the cash generation of the franchises supporting it.

Meta shares dropped 7 percent following its earnings report, despite beating revenue estimates. The company plans to raise $95 billion in stock to support AI investments. Meta expects capital expenditures to reach as high as $145 billion this year. Analysts project this spending will surpass $210 billion in 2027. Investors responded positively to early success with the company's Muse AI agent app, which offers potential revenue beyond advertising.

Christopher Ballard, a managing director at Check Capital Management, argued that Alphabet's negative cash flow is manageable relative to its overall financials. The company's operating income exceeded $40 billion for the quarter. Ballard compared the major tech firms to unprofitable AI model companies, noting that the former possess strong balance sheets. He described their borrowing strategy as a responsible way to invest in the future.
