Anthropic backers hold billions before the public debut
Early investors and late stage funds see massive paper gains as the AI firm prepares for a potential trillion dollar listing.

The number that stands out most in the current data is nine hundred sixty five billion dollars. That is the latest private market valuation for Anthropic. It is a staggering figure for a company that has not yet gone public. The firm is expected to list on a public stock exchange this year. Some analysts predict its value could reach two trillion dollars at that time. Even without the IPO, the stakes held by early backers are already worth billions.
The company has grown rapidly since its early days. In 2021, the startup was valued at just 461 million dollars. Now, the gap between then and now is enormous. This growth has created significant windfalls for venture capital firms and individual investors. They have held onto their shares through several rounds of funding. The value of those shares has increased dramatically.
Eric Schmidt is one of the most notable early backers. He is the former CEO of Google. Schmidt invested in the Series A round in 2021. At that time, the company was worth 461 million dollars. He currently owns about one percent of Anthropic. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly ten billion dollars.
Other major players entered later in the company's history. Iconiq wrote a check for six billion dollars last year. At that point, Anthropic was valued at 183 billion dollars. That massive investment is now worth seventeen billion dollars. If the IPO goes well, that figure could double. Menlo Ventures led the Series D round. It has invested more than one billion dollars in total. Its stake is now valued at fourteen billion dollars.
Sequoia is another name that often appears in tech news. This firm backed Anthropic for the first time earlier this year. The company was already worth 380 billion dollars at that time. Sequoia invested three billion dollars. This gave it about one percent ownership. Its investment has already more than doubled in value.
Sound Ventures also has a significant position. It was launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher. The firm put 35 million dollars into the 2023 Series C round. It has since added another 400 million dollars. This combined stake is now worth billions. Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to start a new venture capital firm.
Spark Capital holds a unique position in the company. It is the only known venture firm with a board seat. Spark invested 75 million dollars in the 2023 Series C round. Back then, the company was valued at five billion dollars. That position has grown by more than ninetyfold. It is now worth seven billion dollars.
What happens next depends on the timing of the public listing. If the company lists at the projected two trillion dollars, these values will rise further. For now, the investors are sitting on substantial paper gains. The market will soon decide if those gains become cash.
