Prospective buyers of Tesla’s fully autonomous two-seater now have a concrete timeline for ownership, as the company confirmed that initial deliveries to the public will commence before the end of 2026. This announcement concludes a period of uncertainty regarding whether the Cybercab would remain exclusively within Tesla’s internal operations or become available for private purchase in the near term.

During the third-quarter 2026 earnings call held on October 21, Lars Moravy, Vice President of Engineering, stated that the company is targeting the end of the current year for these transfers. While production is actively underway at the Gigafactory in Texas, Moravy clarified that all units currently rolling off the assembly line are being allocated to Tesla’s own Robotaxi fleet. He noted that this internal deployment allows the company to refine its operations before introducing the vehicle to external owners.

As the service expands, Moravy explained that Tesla will primarily deliver fully designed autonomous vehicles to its customers, with the Cybercab serving as the first model in this category. The scale of these initial private deliveries is expected to be modest. This phased approach is intended to allow the company to accumulate practical experience in several critical areas, including delivery logistics, ownership models, fleet management, and the operational oversight of autonomous vehicles that are no longer under direct corporate control.

CEO Elon Musk reinforced the strategic positioning of the Cybercab as a service rather than a traditional consumer commodity. He described the vehicle primarily as a “transport-as-a-service” offering, distinguishing it from personal ownership options like the Model 3, Model Y, or the upcoming Roadster. Musk emphasized that the “vast majority” of Cybercab units will remain Tesla-owned, ensuring that the vehicle functions largely within the company’s managed autonomous ride-sharing network.

The Cybercab is a specialized two-seater vehicle that lacks a steering wheel and pedals, relying entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology. Production of the vehicle began in February of this year, with early units entering the public Robotaxi service in early September. Tesla has previously indicated an approximate price point of $30,000 for the vehicle when it becomes available for sale.

Looking ahead, Ashok Elluswamy, Head of AI at Tesla, indicated that unsupervised Full Self-Driving capabilities are expected to reach consumer vehicles in the second quarter of 2027. However, early Cybercab buyers or fleet operators may encounter geographical restrictions on autonomous operation due to the pace of regulatory approvals. Despite the established delivery timeline, several operational and regulatory hurdles remain to be addressed before the broader rollout to private customers is complete.
