Dale Brown died Friday, Oct. 23, two days after Louisiana State University announced his selection for the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. Brown was 90.
Brown coached the LSU men’s basketball team for 25 seasons from 1972 to 1997. He recorded 448 victories, a school record for any head coach. During his tenure, the Tigers secured four Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and earned 13 berths in the NCAA Tournament. The program reached the Final Four in 1981 and 1986.
The coaching roster included Shaquille O’Neal, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and Rudy Macklin. Brown received the Associated Press National Coach of the Year honor in 1981. He was named SEC Coach of the Year four times. Inductees in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame include Brown.
In a family statement, relatives described Brown as a man who prioritized others. They said he always led with his heart and acted as a humanitarian. The family noted that Brown fell in love with Louisiana and its people reciprocated that affection.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry said Brown put LSU basketball on the map. Sports journalist Marc J. Spears called Brown an extraordinary human who shared wisdom on basketball and life. LSU renamed its primary court Dale Brown/Sue Gunter Court in 2023 to honor two former coaches.
In a 2025 interview with WAFB, Brown recalled a game against top-ranked Kentucky where all five starters fouled out. He told his remaining players they were backups, not substitutes, and the team won. Brown said his mother taught him to do what is right and warned that polishing one’s image tarnishes character.
Brown was born on Oct. 31, 1935, in Minot, North Dakota. He died eight days before his 91st birthday.
