The rain had not yet fallen on the final minutes of the game, but the tension in Chapel Hill was palpable as North Carolina threatened to dethrone the national champion.

Mark Fletcher Jr. broke the stalemate with a 2-yard touchdown run on fourth down with 7:49 left in the fourth quarter. That score gave No. 1 Miami a 32-28 lead, but the game was not yet decided.

Two minutes later, Marquise Lightfoot stripped Billy Edwards Jr. from behind as the Tar Heels quarterback attempted a pass. Justin Scott recovered the fumble with 5:33 remaining, securing possession for the Hurricanes and shifting the momentum decisively.

Miami coach Mario Cristobal noted that the fumble was a massive turnaround that swung the game. "In games like that, really important, like we tell our players, you just keep playing," Cristobal said. "Because you don't know what play is going to turn the whole thing around."

The Hurricanes capitalized on the stop. Darian Mensah moved the chains on a 9-yard pass to Malachi Toney after Elija Lofton made a leaping catch to extend the drive. Mensah then struck Toney again on a 9-yard score with 2:33 left, extending the lead to 38-28.

North Carolina, led by Bill Belichick, refused to fold. The Tar Heels sustained multiple long drives, including one that lasted nearly 8.5 minutes and resulted in a touchdown. Billy Edwards Jr. threw for a season-high 341 yards and four touchdowns, with Jelani Thurman catching two of those scores.

The game remained close until the final minute. North Carolina recovered an onside kick after two previous attempts were negated by penalties, allowing Miami to kneel out the remaining time. The Hurricanes improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

North Carolina dropped to 4-4 and 2-3 in conference play, falling to a record 0-12 against No. 1-ranked opponents. Miami travels to No. 5 Notre Dame next Saturday, while the Tar Heels leave conference play to visit UConn.
