iPhone Duo Display: Fixed sidebar reduces usable space on 5.4-inch screen
A new review notes the device's dock consumes 15 percent of the small outer display, a layout that differs from the Galaxy Z Fold 8 approach.

Apple has released its first wide foldable smartphone, but early user feedback suggests the software design limits the utility of the device's smaller screen. The iPhone Duo is already on the market, though its availability remains restricted to select regions. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 continues to sell well, offering a direct comparison for consumers weighing the two options.
Allison Johnson of The Verge provided a short review that identifies specific usability issues. She noted that the iPhone Duo is harder to operate with one hand than its competitor. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a taller and narrower physical profile, which makes its cover screen easier to manage. This design difference matters for users who prioritize access to the outer display.
A major point of criticism concerns the layout of the 5.4-inch cover screen on the iPhone Duo. Apple implemented a fixed sidebar on the right side of the display to aid navigation. This dock occupies a large portion of the small screen, leaving a significant chunk of real estate unused for main content. A post on Twitter/X illustrated the severity of this space loss compared to other foldables.
The design choice reflects an attempt to manage a small display in a specific way. By shrinking the available space, the system stretches media vertically to mimic the aspect ratio of a standard slab device. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 demonstrates a different approach. When set to use a navigation bar instead of gestures, the Z Fold 8 wastes very little screen space. Users who rely on navigation gestures on the Z Fold 8 experience an even cleaner display.
The software experience on the iPhone Duo is described as leaving something to be desired. This is consistent with the historical pattern of new form factors requiring time to refine operating system integration. Samsung and Google have improved Android for large screens over the years. Apple is attempting a similar optimization for iOS on a wider foldable canvas for the first time.
The iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8 are both available for purchase now. The Z Fold 8 is seeing continued success in the market. The iPhone Duo remains in a limited release phase. Users looking for a foldable must decide between the two based on these early software differences.
