Josh Jacobs told reporters on Thursday that his post-touchdown celebration, which drew criticism for resembling a handcuffing, was a direct reference to the gospel song 'Break Every Chain.' The Green Bay Packers running back clarified that the gesture was not an acknowledgment of his recent legal troubles but a planned expression of gratitude. He stated that the idea originated from discussions with teammates, specifically wide receiver Savion Williams, before his return to the roster.
The controversy followed Jacobs' second game of the season, which took place on Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers. The Packers won that contest 27-19. Jacobs had been placed on the NFL commissioner's exempt list in August following the filing of charges related to a May altercation with his then-girlfriend. During that incident, the woman alleged that Jacobs threw her to the ground. He pleaded no contest last month to misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property.
Before his suspension, Jacobs was unable to practice or play. The league removed him from the exempt list last week, allowing him to return to action while the NFL's investigation into his conduct remains ongoing. His season debut occurred earlier in the week against the Detroit Lions, a game the Packers lost 20-17. During that matchup, Jacobs scored a touchdown and celebrated by dropping to his knees and raising his arms.
On Thursday, Jacobs scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter. As he accepted congratulations from teammates, he briefly placed his hands behind his back. Broadcast footage captured only that specific moment, leading many viewers to interpret the action as a simulation of being arrested. Jacobs argued that the telecast omitted the rest of the sequence, stating that the celebration contained more elements than what was shown on television.
"The guys did it with me," Jacobs said regarding the group nature of the celebration. "I didn't think it was going to be a thing that can be perceived a certain type of way. But it's 2026, and it is what it is." He added that the broadcast stopped showing the celebration after the hand position, which contributed to the public perception of the act.
The running back emphasized that the plan to perform the 'Break Every Chain' move was set prior to his second touchdown of the season. He described the gesture as a way to thank God for his return. Despite the social media reaction, Jacobs maintained that the intent was musical and spiritual rather than a commentary on his legal status or the ongoing league review.
Jacobs is expected to continue playing for the Packers as the season progresses. The team will evaluate his performance in upcoming matchups while the NFL completes its separate administrative review of the incident that led to his initial suspension.
