Arsenal secured a 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium to match Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. The win erased a three-point deficit that had existed after City suffered their first defeat of the season at Aston Villa. Both clubs now sit on 21 points after eight matches.
Heavy rain in north London did not dampen Arsenal's early momentum. Martin Odegaard delivered a corner that Jordan Pickford initially stopped, but Ezri Konsa pounced on the rebound in the seventh minute. The defender scored from a yard out, marking his first goal for the club and ending a 13-game set-piece drought for Arsenal.
The second goal arrived in the 68th minute and featured two players reaching career milestones. Ben White, playing his 200th game for the Gunners, crossed to the far post for Gabriel, who headed the ball home on his 200th Premier League appearance. Everton remains in ninth place following the loss.
In Birmingham, Nicolas Jackson scored twice to lead Aston Villa to a 2-1 win over Manchester City. Jackson opened the scoring in the sixth minute after a mistake by Marc Guehi allowed John McGinn to set up the striker. Erling Haaland equalized for City with a header from a free kick just after halftime, but Jackson restored Villa's lead in the 60th minute.
The result moved Unai Emery's team to sixth place with 11 points, securing their first home league victory of the campaign. It also marked Villa's third consecutive league win against Manchester City. Jackson noted that the club is focusing on working game by game while awaiting the outcome of City's financial appeal.
Manchester City faces an independent commission's finding of 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules. The club has denied wrongdoing and is currently appealing the decision. This off-field situation adds pressure to the title race as City looks to recover from their opening loss.
Elsewhere in the matchday, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Cole Palmer was sent off in the 80th minute after a second yellow card. Mathys Tel scored the final goal in the 87th minute, helping Spurs move to 12th. Fulham also won 1-0 against Coventry City, with Oscar Bobb scoring in the 80th minute to lift Fulham to 13th place.
