Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League campaign came to an abrupt halt on Saturday with a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa. The defeat marks the end of a seven-match winning streak for the visitors and extends their recent struggle at this specific ground.
Nicolas Jackson was the decisive figure in the match. The striker scored both goals for Unai Emery's team. The first goal came early in the game. A heavy touch by Marc Guehi set up the attack. Jackson cut inside Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the sixth minute.
The second goal arrived in the 60th minute. Ibrahim Mbaye found space behind the City defense and delivered a cross. Jackson finished low from close range. Donnarumma was expected to make the save but could not stop the ball from entering the net. This goal proved to be the winner.
Manchester City had control of possession for much of the first half. They created several chances through Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made key saves to keep the scoreline level. Erling Haaland did manage to equalize in the 52nd minute with a header from a Ndiaye cross. This was his 13th goal in ten appearances this season. Josko Gvardiol also hit the crossbar with a powerful drive shortly after Haaland's goal.
The result provides an opportunity for Arsenal. The Gunners can move level with City at the top of the table if they defeat Everton at home later this week. For Villa, the win improves their standing in the league. They now sit in sixth place after recording their sixth victory in seven matches across all competitions.
This performance highlights the continued success of manager Unai Emery. He has transformed the club into a Champions League contender despite significant squad turnover. Six players who started last season's Europa League final departed during the summer transfer window. New signings including Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi are already contributing effectively to the team's results.
Manchester City remain focused on the pitch even while dealing with off-field issues. The 10-time champions are appealing a guilty verdict on over 100 charges related to financial rules between 2009 and 2018. Potential sanctions include heavy fines or relegation. Despite this background, the team has maintained strong form, though two defensive errors at Villa Park ultimately cost them the match.
