Russell Brand denied all seven charges against him while testifying in a London court on Wednesday. The 51-year-old actor and comedian answered "no" to three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault. He entered Southwark Crown Court with his wife, Laura Gallacher, telling reporters that the day was dedicated to truth and justice.
Brand took the oath in the witness box and identified himself as Russell Edward Brand. During his examination by lawyer Ian Winter, he stated that the allegations have consumed his life. He claimed that friends and colleagues have abandoned him and that no one with relevant evidence has been willing to testify in his defense.
"My entire life has been consumed by these events, these accusations," Brand said. He noted that the impact extended to his personal life when he was barred from staying with his infant son at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The hospital cited material published in a newspaper and a television documentary in 2023 as the reason for the restriction while the child underwent open heart surgery.
The defense attorney asked Brand to address specific incidents alleged to have occurred in a hotel room, MTV offices, and a London bar toilet. Brand denied forcing any woman to act against her will. He described consent as fundamental and essential, stating it is often more important than the act itself.
Over the past two weeks, the prosecution presented its case to the jury. Six women testified that Brand engaged in sexual misconduct between 1999 and 2009. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones characterized Brand as ruthless and calculating, arguing that the evidence shows he was a sexual predator.
Brand gained prominence in the early 2000s through stand-up comedy, television hosting, and a BBC radio show. He appeared in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek and was briefly married to Katy Perry. In recent years, he relocated to Florida and built an online audience through videos focusing on wellness, conspiracy theories, and his Christian faith.
