Ten people have died after two high-speed trains collided in Toledo province, according to the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning and forced the state rail infrastructure authority to halt all traffic between Madrid and the southern region of Andalucía.

Esther Padilla, a spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, stated that authorities could confirm ten deaths while warning that the toll might rise. She told local media that the information arriving from the scene was not good at all. Government sources told El País that the severity of this crash could exceed that of the Adamuz rail disaster in January, which claimed 46 lives.

The rail operator Adif identified the collision as a rear-end impact on the line connecting Madrid and Seville. TVE reported that the moving train struck the back of a stationary service, knocking two carriages off the track. Regional television footage showed one carriage remaining on an elevated section of the line, while twisted metal and broken panels lay scattered across the embankment below.

Local infrastructure is being repurposed for immediate care. Manuel Galán, the mayor of Urda, a town near Toledo, said emergency services requested that he prepare a local sports hall to accommodate the injured. The collision site is in the Castilla-La Mancha region, where the administrative response is being coordinated by regional authorities.

National political leaders have paused their schedules in response to the event. Spain’s main political parties suspended their planned activities for the day as they prepare for the general election next month. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted on X that he remained in constant contact with the transport minister and the president of Castilla-La Mancha. He added that emergency services were working on the ground to assist those affected and ensure their safety.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the opposition People’s Party, expressed concern about the new rail accident on social media. He stated that the priority is to attend to the victims and support their families. Feijóo offered his full support to the emergency teams currently operating at the crash site.

The Madrid to Seville high-speed line remains suspended pending further investigation. The state rail infrastructure authority confirmed the halt in services following the impact. Local officials continue to manage the logistics of treating the injured in temporary facilities near the town of Urda.
