Steve Wilson has joined Netflix to oversee podcast content acquisitions.
First Key Point: Netflix confirmed the appointment of Wilson, who will begin in a consultant role. Bloomberg initially reported the move. Wilson spent 15 years at Apple, where he worked in editorial, partner relations, and show marketing for Apple Podcasts. He most recently served as chief strategy officer at QCODE and left his position at Daylight Media to join the streamer.
Second Key Point: The hiring coincides with a major organizational shift at Netflix. The company announced plans to cut approximately 6 percent of its workforce, or about 1,000 employees. This marks the largest staff reduction since 2022. Netflix stated these cuts were necessary to address areas where the company was overinvested. The reduction included senior leadership changes, such as the departures of chief content officer Bela Bajaria, film chief Dan Lin, and VP of film Doug Belgrad, alongside other high-ranking television executives.
Third Key Point: Netflix has steadily increased its podcast offerings since late 2025. In November 2025, the streamer finalized a partnership with Spotify to acquire select video podcasts. These titles include The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Zach Lowe Show, The McShay Show, The Rewatchables, and Conspiracy Theories. Following that deal, Netflix licensed content from iHeartMedia and Barstool. The company also launched its own shows, including The Pete Davidson Show, and signed creators such as Jay Shetty and Charlemagne Tha God.
Context: Netflix requires exclusivity for these podcast titles on its platform. Industry observers view this strategy as a competitive move against YouTube and an effort to attract viewers during daytime hours. Despite the new executive hire and expanded library, Netflix has not released specific viewing statistics for its podcast segments. The company has not yet executed a full-scale push into the medium.
