The United States government has spent $2 trillion on the conflict with Iran, a figure former President Barack Obama presented to voters in Ohio on Saturday. He used the cost to frame his argument against the current administration during a campaign rally for Democratic candidates.
Obama stated that President Donald Trump made a series of poor decisions during his second term. He specifically identified the start of the war between the US, Israel, and Iran as an unnecessary conflict that the public did not request. The former president urged Ohioans to vote out the Republican administration, citing two years of what he described as chaos and incompetence.
The political atmosphere in Ohio has grown tense in the final stretch of the midterm elections. Contests for governor and the US Senate are expected to be close, with polls showing Democrats holding a slight lead in both races. The state’s Democratic ticket includes Amy Acton for governor and former Senator Sherrod Brown for the Senate seat currently held by Republican Jon Husted.
Obama addressed a controversy in the gubernatorial race involving an attack ad released by Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The advertisement features Donna Arthur, Acton’s mother, who disputes her daughter’s account of a childhood marked by homelessness and sexual abuse. Acton stated she has not seen her mother since 1978. Her brother has supported her account, and the stepfather mentioned in the claims died in 2004 after being charged with rape.
The former president defended Acton on the stage, noting that she spoke movingly about her painful experiences with abuse and neglect. He criticized the standards of behavior in the race, suggesting that Ramaswamy crossed a line with the specific content of the spot. Brown stood beside Acton and Obama as the former president called for a change in leadership.
The rally marked a key moment in the Ohio campaign as candidates prepare for the upcoming election. The financial figure of the Iran war served as a central economic theme in Obama’s speech to the crowd.
