Israeli military forces have sealed off the city of Hebron, forcing more than two thousand residents to leave their homes as part of a broader security operation across the occupied West Bank. This immediate response followed an ambush on Friday that resulted in the deaths of two Israeli army reservists. The military has since conducted hundreds of raids in the area, establishing a perimeter that currently prevents people from entering or exiting the city. Hebron Mayor Yousef al-Ja'bari confirmed the displacement figures, noting that the sudden nature of the orders has left many families with limited options for shelter.

The lockdown was ordered by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who declared a full closure of the West Bank after the attack. The incident began when two Palestinian gunmen targeted an Israeli army reserve base. Both attackers were killed during the engagement, along with the two soldiers. In the days since, Israeli forces have expanded their operations to at least fifteen different areas. These locations include Jenin and Nablus in the north, Ramallah and East Jerusalem in the center, and Bethlehem in the south. The Palestinian Prisoners' Society reported that approximately seventy Palestinians were arrested during these coordinated raids.

Residents in Hebron described the evacuation process as chaotic and urgent. Soldiers used loudspeakers to announce orders late at night, leaving little time for people to gather belongings. The city, which is home to about two hundred thousand people, is now cut off from the rest of the region. Another six hundred thousand residents live in the wider Hebron governorate, the most populous area in the West Bank. Activist Issa Amro described the situation as a siege, stating that all entrances and exits have been closed since early morning. He added that there is no safe place to hide inside the city and that fear is pervasive.

Tensions have risen further as the Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, has called the military actions collective punishment. The PA cited the demolition of homes and the closure of cities as evidence of this stance. The group has urged the international community to apply pressure on Israel to protect civilians. In a separate statement, Hamas said that the ongoing campaigns by the occupation and settlers would only increase outrage among the population. The PA’s appeal highlights the diplomatic friction surrounding the military response to the recent violence.

The timing of these events is politically significant, occurring just days before Israeli parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27. Observers suggest that politicians are using the attack to shape their public image. Current polling data indicates that Netanyahu and his right-wing coalition are trailing in the race. Analysts believe the government is projecting strength by emphasizing its military actions against Palestinian groups. This strategy aims to appeal to voters who prioritize security in the lead-up to the vote.

There are also questions about the future relationship between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Netanyahu has avoided giving a direct answer on whether he intends to dismantle the PA. Instead, he hinted that a big surprise awaits the organization. This ambiguity adds another layer of uncertainty to the political landscape. For now, the focus remains on the immediate security situation in Hebron, where thousands of displaced residents are waiting for clarity on when they can return home.

The military operation also drew attention from journalists documenting the events. Reporters covering an Israeli effort to bulldoze homes and vehicles near the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint were targeted by soldiers. A stun grenade was fired at the media team during the operation. These incidents underscore the high stakes and intensity of the current security campaign. As the week progresses, the impact of the lockdown on daily life and local commerce continues to grow, with businesses closed and movement strictly controlled.
