World Cup Records: Mbappe's Solo Run for Top Honor
The Real Madrid forward has no major trophies this season, but his 22 World Cup goals put him atop the all-time list.

Kylian Mbappe enters the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday without a team trophy to his name. The 2025-26 season ended without silverware for him at the club or international level. He is not the favorite among bookmakers, nor was he the top scorer in every competition last year. Yet he has spent the final weeks building a statistical case for the prize, which carries no cash award but increases a player's market value and status.
The path to this moment began with a turbulent campaign for Real Madrid. The club switched managers from Xabi Alonso to Alvaro Arbeloa during the season. They finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This marked the second consecutive season without a major trophy for the Spanish giants. Mbappe's national team, France, also fell short, placing fourth at the 2026 World Cup in North America after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match.
Despite the team failures, Mbappe set individual records. At the World Cup, he won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. He finished with 22 goals in 22 matches, moving ahead of Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. This performance made him the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. At the club level, he scored 25 goals to lead La Liga and netted 15 in the Champions League, where he also topped the scoring charts.
Mbappe believes these numbers outweigh the lack of silverware. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," he said last month. When asked who he was voting for, he replied: "Myself." He noted that his status as top scorer in all major competitions makes it a good year for him. Manager Jose Mourinho has publicly supported the bid. "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team," Mourinho said.
The main obstacle is the award's recent history. For the past decade, every winner has lifted at least one trophy in the eligibility year. Ousmane Dembele won in 2025 after helping PSG secure their first Champions League title. Rodri won in 2024 after capturing Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City. Rival candidates this year have stronger trophy counts. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane collected three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title.
Mbappe argues that individual brilliance is the key factor. "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told the radio station RFI. He believes the ability to produce eye-catching moments defines a player for this specific award. The ceremony will determine if his record-setting 2026 is enough to break the recent trend of trophy-heavy winners.
There is one historical precedent for a winner without a major team trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in 2013 while playing for Real Madrid. That year, he scored 66 goals for club and country, but Portugal failed to pass the 2012 World Cup playoffs, and Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Ronaldo’s win ended Lionel Messi’s four-year streak. Mbappe has been nominated nine times and finished third in 2023. The vote on Monday will reveal if his record-breaking season is sufficient to claim the honor he has chased for years.
