The 2026 Ballon d'Or recipient will be named at a ceremony at the London Palladium in less than 24 hours. Three players dominate the conversation for football's most prestigious individual award: Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane.
Yamal, the 19-year-old Barcelona winger, and Mbappe, the 2018 World Cup champion, have both publicly campaigned for the trophy. Kane, who has scored at a high rate this season, has remained quieter in his promotion of his own case.
Forecasts for the 2025-26 season vary between data firms and betting markets. Avisia, a French data analysis company, identifies Yamal as the favorite with a 23 percent probability of winning. Kane follows at 21 percent. Mbappe holds a 19 percent chance, tying him with Rodri, the 2024 winner. Lionel Messi, who seeks a record ninth award, completes the top five at 18 percent. Avisia notes that its model correctly predicted the top five candidates for the previous year's award, which Ousmane Dembele won. Bookmakers offer a different view, listing Kane as the outright favorite with approximately 70 percent support.
Current and former players have weighed in on the likely outcome. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone endorsed Messi, stating that the Argentine played at his age after the World Cup without doubt. Former Italy international Marco Materazzi agreed, describing Messi as being in a different league at 38. Jude Bellingham, who is also on the shortlist, backed Kane, calling him an honest and hard-working person for whom a win is definitely possible. Anthony Gordon supported his Barcelona teammate Yamal, while Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni called Mbappe's season incredible.
Statistical records present strong arguments for both Mbappe and Kane. Mbappe led La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15. He also took the World Cup Golden Boot and set a tournament record with 12 goals. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi recorded 82 in 2011-12.
Trophy counts complicate the statistical leads. Mbappe did not win a major title with club or country. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third with England at the World Cup. Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, despite injury affecting his personal numbers.
Historical trends favor players with major silverware. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners did not capture the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America in the year they were honored. A victory for Yamal would make him the youngest recipient in the award's history, surpassing the record held by Brazil's Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.
