Manchester United fans booed their entire squad out of Old Trafford on Sunday following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. This result extended the club's worst start to a Premier League season in 40 years. The reaction marked a shift in fan behavior, as supporters traditionally reserve boos for management rather than the players.
The club entered this crisis with a history of recruitment struggles. Since Cristiano Ronaldo left in November 2022, United have lacked a consistent goalscorer. Rasmus Hojlund was brought in as a long-term solution but was sold to Italy. Benjamin Sesko arrived in the summer of 2025 as a high-profile replacement. At 23, Sesko has shown flashes of promise but missed key games due to injury. His absence left the side without a natural striker. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were deployed in the role, though both prefer wide areas. Bruno Fernandes was moved into a false nine position, a role that limited his passing range.
United's current leading scorer is Bryan Mbeumo with four goals. Eight other players in the league have scored more than he has. Ownership and management face mounting pressure. The Glazer family acquired the club in 2005. Ed Woodward served as CEO until 2022. The current leadership duo consists of CEO Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox. Defender Lisandro Martinez, who helped Argentina reach the 2026 World Cup final, publicly criticized Wilcox for a lack of summer investment. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS Group invested heavily two years ago, leading to off-field cost cuts and plans to rebuild Old Trafford. Fans view Ratcliffe with the same skepticism they hold for the Glazers.
Tensions also exist between manager Michael Carrick and star player Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes was booed on Sunday despite not playing. This followed his public criticism of Carrick's tactics after a loss to Como in the Champions League. Fernandes, 32, remains the club's most influential player on the pitch. The Saudi Pro League and Galatasaray both expressed interest in signing him this summer. Fernandes has voiced disappointment that United were willing to sell him.
The squad also lacks depth at left-back. Lewis Hall of Newcastle United was linked with a move on the final day of the transfer window, but the deal never completed. Tactical identity remains unclear. Former players and managers have clashed over style. Ralf Rangnick, now coaching Austria, previously described the club's needs as requiring open-heart surgery. Gary Neville called out a lack of professionalism in the squad on Sky Sports.
United's next match is scheduled for next week. The club faces a decision on its tactical approach and potential personnel changes. The squad must determine if it will press high, sit deep, or continue with its current hybrid style.
