Arsenal ended their Carabao Cup campaign with a 3-5 penalty loss to League One side Fleetwood Town on Tuesday evening. The result followed a 1-1 draw in regular time, capping a night in which the Premier League champions were held to a draw despite holding 78% possession and registering 26 shots.
The match was decided by a red card for 16-year-old winger Max Dowman. Dowman, who started in place of injured Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Christos Tzolis, reacted to a heavy challenge from Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal. Referee Michael Salisbury showed Dowman a red card for a movement toward Neal with his leg. It is the second red card for the teenager in one month, following a dismissal for England U19s during the last international break.
Manager Mikel Arteta addressed the incident in the post-match interview. He stated that the team had discussed the need to dominate emotionally before the game. "It was very clear," Arteta said. He noted that the squad had given Dowman a scathing look as the player left the pitch and that he spoke to him in the tunnel about a point they had already covered prior to the match.
Arsenal fielded an experimental lineup that included debutant 18-year-old Ceadach O’Neill, 17-year-old center back Marli Salmon, and goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who made his first start for the club. Arteta paired these young players with seasoned internationals including Jurrien Timber, Piero Hincapie, Martin Zubimendi, Kai Havertz, and Viktor Gyokeres. The Gunners went behind in the first half but equalized before halftime. Despite introducing captain Martin Odegaard and new signing Bruno Guimaraes, Arsenal failed to break the deadlock.
The defeat extends Arsenal’s League Cup drought to 33 years. The club has not won the competition since 1993. They have previously suffered similar upsets, including penalty losses to Bradford City in 2012 and Sheffield Wednesday in 2015 at the same stage of the tournament. The result was compounded by the performance of Arsenal’s under-21 team, which defeated AFC Wimbledon later the same night in the EFL trophy.
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson defended Dowman’s reaction on Sky Sports, noting the player’s age and frustration. "You have to remember he is 16 years of age, he's a kid," Merson said. He suggested that Arteta’s reaction in the tunnel may be regretted later, comparing it to how the manager treats experienced internationals. Leon Osman, a former Everton midfielder, agreed that the red card was fair, citing a poor reaction from Dowman to a standard defensive challenge.
Arsenal will face Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League with a thin wide rotation. Saka is out for approximately six weeks, Tzolis is working toward a return, and Madueke is unavailable due to injury. Dowman is suspended for the fixture, leaving Arteta with limited options on the flanks.
