Barcelona will pay a 602 euro fine, or roughly $670, after the Spanish Football Federation sanctioned the club for its approach to Julian Alvarez. The penalty follows a formal complaint from Atletico Madrid, which alleged Barcelona made contact with the Argentine striker without first sending a written notification.

The sanction cites Article 133 of the federation's regulations. Atletico also filed a complaint with FIFA, but the international body stated it lacked jurisdiction over the dispute. The legal process concluded without altering Alvarez's contract, which remains in force through June 2030.

Alvarez continued to play for Atletico while the administrative dispute unfolded. He scored the winning goal against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, marking his second consecutive match with a goal. The victory moved Atletico within two points of La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Following the match, Alvarez addressed the friction caused by his public comments. In an interview during the 2026 World Cup, he said he wanted to fulfill his dream of playing for Barcelona. That statement triggered a transfer dispute that persisted through the summer window. Alvarez acknowledged the backlash from his current supporters.

"It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I'd be angry, too. Especially given how they've supported me since I arrived," Alvarez said. He was booed by home crowds earlier in the season but received a standing ovation from parts of the crowd after scoring on Saturday.

Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 for a fee of up to 95 million euros. He scored 36 goals in 103 appearances for Manchester City before moving to Spain. Since arriving at Atletico, he has recorded 51 goals in 115 games.
